Bloom Box Fuel Cell
Bloom energy fuel cells, a highly touted and promoted source for clean energy, were unveiled this weekend on 60 minutes as the founder of the Bloom Box, K.R. Sridhar invited CBS’s Leslie Stahl for a sneak peak at this new energy source. Bloom Energy is producing tiny fuel cell boxes they call “Bloom Boxes.” Compact Bloom Servers built with energy cells made from silicon – a plentiful element found in sand – made their formal debut in an eBay building here partially powered by the energy source. Bloom Energy uses these Bloom boxes to bake sand and cuts it into little squares that are turned into a ceramic, which are then coated with green and black inks. Using a special process, Bloom Energy creates these ceramic discs and stacks them together interspersed with metal plates of a cheap metal alloy. In fact, four of these Bloom Boxes have apparently been powering a Google data center for the past 18 months. Bloom Energy’s actual results could differ materially from those described in Bloom Energy’s forward-looking statements. Other factors that could cause or contribute to such differences include, but are not limited to, risks related to significant regulatory, supply and competitive barriers to entry and risks related to the Bloom Energy’s manufacturing strategy which relies heavily on third party suppliers for a significant portion of the contents of the Bloom Energy Server.
Bloom Energy says its corporate customers will see a 3- to 5-year payback on their initial investment. Bloom Energy says it will prevail where others have failed because its technology is distinct in key ways. The company claims to use lower-cost materials, allowing its boxes to be more easily mass produced and affording them a wider potential market. Bloom Energy Corporation unveiled an innovative fuel cell that promises to deliver affordable, clean energy to even remote corners of the world.
Bloom Energy’s idea is to one day replace the big power plants and transmission line grid, the way the laptop moved in on the desktop and cell phones supplanted landlines. Watch out for more updates on Bloom Energy’s stocks and other news. Bloom Energy licensed Modine’s thermal management technology for an up-front fee of $12.0 million last year. In addition, Modine provided transition services to Bloom Energy, including the sale of products, for an additional fee. Bloom Energy presents it as an innovation that will create a revolution in the energy world. The company claims it will enable every individual or organization to produce their own clean and cheap electricity.
